Synopsis

BEYOND BURNSIDE PART 1 After fighting and defeating Gladius, Barbara Gordon resolves to relax a bit and take a backpacking trip across Eastern Asia. Her first stop is Japan, where she hopes to meet Chiyo Yamashiro, a retired crime-fighter and vigilante.   By sheer chance she stumbles on Kai, an old friend she hasn't seen in years. They go out for lunch and catching-up; though Kai gets unexpectedly sick and has to go to the bathroom to throw up.   The next day Barbara gets to greet Yamashiro. While she engages with the old crime-fighter, a heavily made-up young woman dressed like a Japanese schoolgirl assaults Kai. Barbara suits up and battles her, but the woman is surprisingly fast and nimble and dashes off.   She is stopped in her tracks by Chiyo, who proves to be amazingly quick and agile despite being a very old woman. Barbara's adversary doesn't dare fight her and hightails it.   Batgirl is thrilled to have the chance to make Fruit Bat questions, but Chiyo starts feeling hurt after straining herself, and it's time for Batgirl getting away. Before she leaves, though, Chiyo warns her that she can not see the future when the past is standing in her way and she needs to find "teacher".   Batgirl wonders what kind of trouble Kai has gotten himself into this time, and who this "teacher" is. Remembering Chiyo's words regarding "see the future", Barbara comes across a billboard advertising a martial arts tournament in Singapore, ran by an organization calls itself "The Future of Multi Martial Arts".
